Artist Note

It was summer two years ago when I went to Jeju Island to shoot a variety show.
My mother, who lives in Jeju Island, stopped by to get autographs requested by people around her.
There was a request from a friend of my mother asking for an autograph for a 13-year-old son.

I wrote his name and drew my autograph and a picture. I wanted to offer a word of praise, but when I asked what his dream was, he said his body was sick.

When I usually give autographs to kids, I ask, 'What's your dream?' If they want to be a soccer player, I write, (Become a fantastic soccer player!) If they aspire to be a doctor, I write, (Strive to be an excellent doctor~♡) However, this friend is going through a tough time, and I simply couldn't figure out what to write...

I've tried writing things like “Cheer up”…. “Fighting….” or “Take care of yourself~" a few times, but after writing them, it feels like I'm being too irresponsible with my words. So, I spent over thirty minutes sitting down and thinking about the sign which would have taken less than a minute.

After much contemplation, I settled on the idea of a four-leaf clover. A four-leaf clover originally has three leaves, but when it gets stepped on by humans or animals and gets a wound on its body, it grows another leaf and becomes a four-leaf clover.

A situation that cannot be overcome without luck. For a child who has limitations in effort or talent, the only thing I could say was to wish for a miracle-like stroke of luck to come their way. So I drew a four-leaf clover for him.

Upon closer inspection, it seems that in life, no matter how much talent one possesses or how hard they work, it's not easy if luck doesn't follow. As I reach my forties, I feel this even more deeply. Although success is not all about "luck," but luck is important for success as well....

So, in this solo exhibition, I painted a clover instead of a star. In my last solo exhibition, I painted stars in the sky to represent desires such as money, honor, and success, but I felt that in order to become a star, you have to have luck beyond your talent and hard work.

Happiness, Success, Health.... There are so many unstable elements in life. Maybe because of that insecurity, I've been working hard....

I hope everyone gets lucky in their life.
